Experiencing the Freedom of God’s Presence

Introduction: The Invisible Chains

Beloved, we live in a world that talks constantly about freedom. We define it as the right to do what we want, go where we want, and live how we want. Yet, if you look closely at the faces of people walking down the street, you won’t see freedom. You will see anxiety. You will see exhaustion. You will see people bound by the invisible chains of performance, comparison, past trauma, and the crushing weight of trying to control their own destinies.

The great irony of modern life is that the more “free” we claim to be, the more enslaved we often become to our own brokenness.

But I came to bring you good news today. True freedom is not a political status, and it is not a financial achievement. True freedom is a environment, and that environment is the presence of Almighty God.

Let us fix our eyes on the infallible Word of God in 2 Corinthians 3:17:

“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

Paul tells us that freedom isn’t just a concept; it is pinned to a Person. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, chains don’t just loosen—they shatter. Today, we are going to explore how to step out of the prison of our circumstances and experience the true, life-altering freedom found only in God’s presence.

I. Freedom from the Prison of Performance (The Veil is Torn)

To understand what it means to experience freedom in God’s presence, we have to look at the context of 2 Corinthians 3. Paul is contrasting the Old Covenant with the New Covenant.

Under the Old Covenant, God’s presence was shut behind a thick temple veil. Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and only once a year, carrying the blood of sacrifices. There was a constant sense of distance. If you made a mistake, you were cut off. It was a system that, while holy, highlighted human weakness and bred a spirit of fear and performance.

But when Jesus Christ gave up His spirit on the hill of Calvary, the Bible says the heavy temple veil was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51).

  • The Tearing was Divine: It was torn from the top down, meaning man didn’t do it—God did.

  • The Access was Granted: The barrier keeping you from God’s presence was permanently demolished.

Because of Jesus, you no longer have to perform to get into God’s presence. You don’t have to clean yourself up before you come to Him; you come to Him so He can clean you up.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrews 4:16

The first freedom you experience in His presence is the freedom to stop pretending. You can drop the mask. You can stop trying to earn love that has already been freely given to you through the blood of the Lamb.

II. Freedom from the Weight of Restlessness

Our souls are naturally restless. We try to fill the void with success, entertainment, and relationships, but we end up like a person drinking saltwater—the more we drink, the thirstier we get.

Listen to the testimony of King David, a man who had everything the world could offer—power, wealth, fame, and pleasure—yet knew exactly where true satisfaction lived:

“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Psalm 16:11

Notice the word “fullness.” The world can give you fragments of joy, moments of happiness, and temporary pleasures. But fragment joy always leaves room for anxiety to slip back in. When you step into the presence of God through prayer, worship, and devotion, your soul encounters fullness.

  • In His presence, the craving for worldly validation dies.

  • In His presence, the frantic need to fix everything yourself stops, because you realize the Creator of the universe is holding you.

When the Holy Spirit floods your room or your heart, He brings a peace that passes human understanding (Philippians 4:7). It is the freedom of a child sleeping soundly in their parent’s arms while a storm rages outside.

III. Freedom from the Power of Sin and Guilt

There is a tragic mistake many believers make: they try to fight sin using only their willpower. They make resolutions, they try harder, they white-knuckle their way through temptation, only to fall again and carry a heavy backpack of guilt.

Willpower cannot defeat a spiritual strongman. Only the Holy Spirit can.

When Paul writes, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,” he is talking about liberty from the dominion of sin. When you prioritize intimacy with God, something supernatural happens. Your desires begin to change. The things of the world lose their grip on you.

Consider the law of displacement. If I have a glass filled with dirty water, I don’t have to manually scrape the dirt out. All I need to do is put the glass under a running tap of clean water. As the clean water pours in, it naturally forces the dirty water out.

Intimacy with God ──> Holy Spirit Fills the Heart ──> Sinful Desires Displaced

When you pour yourself into the presence of God, His holiness naturally displaces your love for sin. You don’t just get freedom from the penalty of sin (hell); you get freedom from the power of sin today! As Galatians 5:16 promises: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

IV. How to Practice the Presence (Stepping into the Environment)

If this freedom is available, why do so many Christians live in bondage? Because we visit God’s presence on Sunday mornings, but we live in the world’s presence Monday through Saturday.

How do we practically live in the environment of freedom?

Cultivate a Quiet Place: Jesus regularly withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16). If the Son of God needed a quiet place to connect with the Father, how much more do we? Turn off the notifications, close the door, and give God your undivided attention.

  •

Praise is not a warm-up for a sermon; it is a spiritual weapon that shifts the atmosphere. When Paul and Silas were locked in the deepest dungeon, chained and bleeding, they didn’t complain. At midnight, they prayed and sang hymns (Acts 16:25). What happened? An earthquake shook the prison, and every door was opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. Your worship releases the liberating power of God into your situation.

  •

Practice talking to God throughout your day. Acknowledge Him in your car, at your desk, and in your meetings. Keep the communication line open.

Conclusion: Walk Out of the Tomb

I want to close with a powerful picture from the Gospel of John. Jesus stood outside the tomb of His dear friend Lazarus, who had been dead for four days. Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” (John 11:43).

And the dead man walked out of the tomb. He was alive! The resurrection power of Christ had worked a miracle. But watch what happens next in verse 44:

“And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Loose him, and let him go.'”

Lazarus was alive, but he wasn’t free. He was still wrapped in the bindings of the cemetery. He couldn’t walk properly; he couldn’t see clearly. He needed to be loosed from his graveclothes.

Many of us are just like Lazarus. We have surrendered to Jesus, we are saved, we are spiritually alive—but we are still walking around wrapped in the graveclothes of anxiety, depression, bitterness, and addiction.

Jesus is looking at you today and saying, “Loose them, and let them go.” Step out of the graveyard of your own strength and step into the vibrant, rushing wind of the Holy Spirit. Bring your hurts, your habits, and your hangups into His presence today, because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is total, absolute, unconditional liberty.

Let us pray.

Father, we thank You that You do not demand that we live in chains. We thank You that the veil is torn and the way into Your Holy Presence is wide open. For every person reading or hearing these words who feels bound by fear, guilt, or heavy burdens—I pray that Your Holy Spirit would sweep over them right now. Shake the foundations of their prisons. Cause the chains to fall off. Let them experience the breathtaking joy and the refreshing liberty of sitting at Your feet. We walk out of our tombs today and we step into Your freedom. In the matchless name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
